Herbert Gentry (1919, 2003) was an African American expatriate painter who spent much of his life in Europe, particularly in Sweden and Paris, where he developed a distinctive style blending Abstract Expressionism with influences from African masks and jazz culture. His canvases are populated by biomorphic, mask-like figures rendered in bold colors and gestural brushwork, reflecting his deep engagement with African heritage and the improvisational energy of jazz. Gentry is regarded as a significant figure among the generation of Black American artists who sought creative freedom abroad during the mid-20th century.
