Harry Benson is a celebrated photojournalist known for his intimate and iconic portraits of some of the most significant cultural and political figures of the 20th and 21st centuries. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Benson began his career in journalism in the 1950s before moving to London. His big break came in 1964 when he was assigned to photograph The Beatles during their first trip to America. The famous pillow fight photograph he captured in a Paris hotel room became one of the most recognizable images of the band and launched his career into international prominence. Throughout his six-decade career, Benson has worked primarily for Life magazine and later became a contract photographer for Vanity Fair and other major publications. His work spans photojournalism, celebrity portraiture, and documentation of major historical events. He has photographed every U.S. president since Eisenhower, countless Hollywood stars, musicians, and world leaders. Benson was present during pivotal moments in history, including the Robert F. Kennedy assassination in 1968. His ability to capture both glamorous and tragic moments with equal sensitivity has made him one of the most respected photographers of his generation. Benson's style is characterized by his ability to create intimacy and reveal the humanity of his subjects, whether they are celebrities at the height of their fame or world leaders in moments of crisis. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide, and he has published numerous books of his photography. He became a U.S. citizen in 1992 and was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2009 for his contributions to photography.
