Gopal Ghose (1913, 1980) was a pioneering Bengali modernist painter known for his lyrical landscapes and expressive use of colour, often depicting the rural countryside of Bengal with a distinctive impressionistic sensitivity. A founding member of the Calcutta Group formed in 1943, he played a central role in breaking away from the Bengal School's revivalist traditions and embracing a contemporary Indian modernism. His works have been featured in major auction houses including Christie's and Saffronart, where they command significant attention among collectors of Indian modern art.
