Gari Melchers (1860, 1932) was an American realist painter renowned for his genre scenes, portraits, and depictions of Dutch peasant life, which earned him international acclaim during his lifetime. He studied in Düsseldorf and Paris before gaining widespread recognition at major exhibitions, including the 1889 Paris Exposition Universelle. Melchers spent much of his career in Europe before returning to the United States, where he settled at Belmont estate in Falmouth, Virginia, now preserved as a museum dedicated to his legacy.
