Etienne-Maurice Falconet was one of the most celebrated French sculptors of the eighteenth century, renowned for his graceful command of the Rococo style and his ability to render the human form with sensuality and psychological depth. Born in Paris in 1716, he trained under Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne and became a member of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in 1754, presenting his celebrated marble group "Milo of Crotona" as his reception piece. His early career produced numerous elegant mythological and allegorical figures that were prized by aristocratic collectors and the French court, exemplifying the refined decorative spirit of the Louis XV era.
