Ernest Briggs (1923, 1984) was an American Abstract Expressionist painter who emerged from the San Francisco Bay Area art scene before moving to New York, where he became associated with the New York School. Trained under Clyfford Still at the California School of Arts and Crafts, Briggs developed a powerful, gestural style characterized by dense, richly colored fields of paint applied with vigorous brushwork. He was recognized as a significant though often underappreciated figure within the first generation of Abstract Expressionism, exhibiting at prominent venues and teaching at institutions including the Pratt Institute.
