Emma Amos

Emma Amos (1937, 2020) was an American painter and printmaker known for her vibrant, figuratively grounded work that boldly confronted issues of race, gender, and identity. A member of the groundbreaking Spiral group in the 1960s, the only woman in the collective, she later developed a distinctive style combining painted figures with textile borders and woven African fabrics, challenging the hierarchies of both the art world and American society. Her work has gained significant posthumous recognition as a vital contribution to feminist and African American art history.
