Dr. John Murray (1809, 1898) was a pioneering Scottish physician and amateur artist who became renowned for his early photographic works documenting the Indian subcontinent during the British colonial period. Working in the 1850s and 1860s, Murray produced large-format calotype and waxed-paper negative photographs of Agra, including detailed architectural studies of the Taj Mahal and other Mughal monuments, which are considered among the finest examples of early photography in India. His works have appeared at major auction houses including Sotheby's and Christie's, commanding significant prices as rare historical documents that bridge scientific inquiry and artistic vision.
