Désiré Charnay (1828, 1915) was a pioneering French explorer, photographer, and archaeologist best known for his extensive documentation of pre-Columbian ruins in Mexico and Central America during the mid-to-late 19th century. He was among the first photographers to systematically document ancient Mayan and Aztec sites, producing large-format albumen prints that blended scientific inquiry with artistic vision. His photographs, published in works such as 'Cités et ruines américaines' (1863), brought remarkable archaeological discoveries to European audiences and remain historically significant documents of both indigenous heritage and the early history of travel photography.
