Daniel J. Oates is a career law enforcement official who has served as chief of police for Miami Beach, Florida, Aurora, Colorado, and Ann Arbor, Michigan. Before becoming police chief in Ann Arbor in 2001, he spent 21 years with the New York Police Department. He is widely recognized for overseeing the criminal investigation of the 2012 Aurora movie theater mass shooting, one of the largest mass shootings in American history.
