Conrad Wise Chapman (1842, 1910) was an American painter best known for his vivid depictions of Confederate military life during the Civil War, particularly his celebrated series of paintings documenting the fortifications of Charleston, South Carolina. Born in Washington, D.C., he trained in Rome under his father, artist John Gadsby Chapman, and later fought for the Confederacy before being commissioned to create his iconic wartime works. He spent much of his later life in Europe and Mexico, producing landscapes and genre scenes that reflect his cosmopolitan artistic training.
