Chen Ting-Shih (1916, 2002) was a pioneering Taiwanese modernist artist who played a central role in introducing Western abstract art to Taiwan, co-founding the influential Ton Fan Art Group in 1956. His work masterfully synthesized Eastern philosophical sensibilities and traditional ink painting techniques with Western abstract expressionism, creating a distinctive visual language that bridged two worlds. He is regarded as one of the most important figures in postwar Taiwanese modern art, whose legacy helped shape the trajectory of contemporary art in the region.
