Chen Danqing is a celebrated Chinese painter and cultural critic born in 1953 in Shanghai, known for his monumental 'Tibet Series' (1980) which marked a turning point in post-Cultural Revolution Chinese art. Trained in the realist tradition, he later expanded into figurative works exploring Chinese modernity and identity. He spent nearly two decades in New York before returning to China, where he also became a prominent public intellectual and writer.
