Charles-Henri-Joseph Cordier (1827, 1905) was a pioneering French sculptor celebrated for his extraordinary ethnographic busts depicting people from Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, rendered in luxurious polychrome materials such as onyx, porphyry, and enamel. He worked for the French government and Musée d'Histoire Naturelle, traveling extensively to study and document diverse human physiognomies with remarkable sensitivity and dignity. His technically innovative works bridged scientific inquiry and high decorative art, making him one of the most distinctive sculptors of the Second Empire period.
