Baule figure sculpture originates from the Baule people of Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), a Akan-related culture renowned for producing some of West Africa's most refined and technically accomplished wooden figures. These sculptures, including spirit spouse figures (blolo bian and blolo bla) and nature spirit figures (asye usu), serve important spiritual and ritual functions within Baule society. Carved with exceptional attention to naturalistic detail, scarification patterns, and elegant coiffure, Baule figures have commanded significant attention in international auction markets and major ethnographic art collections worldwide.
