Adolf Ulric Wertmüller (1751, 1811) was a Swedish-born portrait painter who trained under his relative Alexander Roslin in Paris and later studied in Rome. He gained international recognition for his portraits of European royalty and aristocracy, most notably his celebrated depiction of Marie Antoinette with her children, and spent significant periods working in France, Italy, and the United States. Wertmüller is considered one of the finest Scandinavian painters of the late 18th century, bridging European Rococo and Neoclassical traditions.
