Filipp Andreevich Maliavin (1869, 1940) was a Russian painter celebrated for his vivid, expressive depictions of Russian peasant women, particularly his swirling, colorful compositions of dancing or laughing figures. Trained under Ilya Repin at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, he gained international recognition after his monumental work 'Whirlwind' won a medal at the 1900 Paris World Exhibition. After emigrating following the Russian Revolution, he continued painting in Europe, maintaining his distinctive bold palette and energetic brushwork.
