Richmond Barthé (1901, 1989) was a pioneering African American sculptor whose work celebrated the beauty and dignity of the Black figure, blending classical technique with a deep sensitivity to human expression. Trained at the Art Institute of Chicago, he became one of the most prominent artists of the Harlem Renaissance, known for his expressive bronze sculptures that depicted dancers, athletes, and spiritual subjects. His work bridged figuration and modernism, earning him widespread recognition and placement in major museum collections across the United States.
