José Mijares (1921, 2004) was a Cuban painter regarded as one of the most significant figures of Cuban modernism, known for his vibrant, expressionistic abstractions that blended European influences with Caribbean sensibility. His work evolved from figurative painting to lyrical abstraction, characterized by rich color fields, dynamic gestural marks, and a deeply personal visual language. After leaving Cuba following the 1959 revolution, he continued his career in Miami, where he became a central figure in the Cuban exile artistic community.
