Morton Livingston Schamberg

American(1881–1918)

Morton Livingston Schamberg was an American avant-garde painter and photographer considered one of the earliest American Dadaists and a pioneer of modernism in the United States. He studied under William Merritt Chase and later became deeply influenced by Cubism and Precisionism after exposure to European modernism, producing a small but critically significant body of geometric, machine-inspired paintings. His promising career was cut tragically short when he died in the 1918 influenza pandemic at the age of 37.
