Sam Middleton

Sam Middleton (1927, 2015) was an American-born abstract artist who spent much of his career in the Netherlands, becoming one of the few African American artists to achieve significant recognition in postwar European art circles. His mixed-media collages and works on paper combined gestural abstraction with textured surfaces, drawing on influences from Abstract Expressionism while developing a distinctly personal visual language. Middleton exhibited widely across Europe and the United States, and his work is held in numerous international collections.
