Acumen Series #12
2019
Acumen Series #12 presents one of Vhils's most technically rigorous approaches to portraiture, combining hand-carving and laser-cutting across accumulated layers of advertising posters to excavate a monumental face from the detritus of urban visual culture. Measuring nearly two meters in height, the work commands presence through its scale and tactile depth, the surface alive with the geological strata of commercial imagery that the artist has selectively removed and retained. Each layer of poster paper functions simultaneously as raw material and as social document, and Vhils transforms this disposable substrate into a meditation on identity, visibility, and the invisible histories embedded in city walls. The Acumen Series represents a refined chapter in Vhils's ongoing investigation into what lies beneath the surface of public space. Completed in 2019 and framed for presentation, this work reflects the Portuguese artist's signature methodology, one that treats destruction as a form of revelation rather than erasure. The precision of the laser-cutting works in tension with the organic irregularities of the hand-carved passages, producing an image that feels simultaneously mechanical and deeply human. This interplay between industrial process and artisanal touch is central to understanding the work's emotional register, where a face emerges not despite the violence of its making, but because of it. Offered through the acclaimed BEYOND THE STREETS exhibition platform, Acumen Series #12 arrives with the artist's signature and original framing, making it an exceptionally complete and collectible example of Vhils at a mature moment in his practice. Works of this scale, medium specificity, and conceptual coherence from this period are increasingly sought by collectors focused on street art's transition into the museum and institutional canon.
