Lip Tide

2019

Lip Tide presents a surreal, organically contoured form in gold-plated pewter encrusted with a dense constellation of Venetian and Czech glass beads, the whole object hovering somewhere between sculptural jewel and animate creature. At just over eleven centimeters in each dimension, the work rewards close inspection, its beaded surface catching light in shifting ways that animate the form with a sense of perpetual movement. The title carries the duo's characteristic wit, suggesting both natural forces and something more bodily, a quality that runs through much of the Haas Brothers' practice and gives their objects their unsettling, seductive charge. Nikolas and Simon Haas have built a reputation for collapsing boundaries between fine art, craft, and the fantastical, drawing on a wide range of cultural references and collaborating closely with skilled artisans to achieve surfaces and forms that feel genuinely unprecedented. Lip Tide exemplifies this approach, combining industrial material with handcrafted beadwork in a way that feels neither purely decorative nor strictly sculptural. The gold-plated pewter base provides a warm, weighty foundation that contrasts beautifully with the glinting translucency of the glass beads layered across it. This is number fifteen from a carefully managed edition of five hundred, and the work is accompanied by its original packaging as well as a custom-designed environmental box conceived by the artists as an extension of the object itself. Signed and complete with all original materials, Lip Tide is an exceptionally accessible point of entry into the Haas Brothers' universe for the collector seeking work that is formally inventive, materially rich, and charged with genuine personality.
