CAROUSEL PYRAMID (SCULPTURE)
2022
CAROUSEL PYRAMID (SCULPTURE) presents Ryan Travis Christian's signature collision of childhood whimsy and unsettling undertone rendered in three-dimensional form. Produced in 2022 as a mixed media sculpture, the work extends Christian's well-established graphic language into physical space, inviting collectors to inhabit the tension that animates his practice from multiple angles. Measuring 40 × 23.5 × 20.6 cm, the piece carries the intimate scale of an object meant to be lived with, its presence at once playful and quietly disconcerting in the way that defines Christian's most compelling output. Christian, born in 1983 and raised in suburban Chicago, has long drawn on the aesthetics of vintage political cartoons and hand-drawn animation to construct a visual world where the familiar turns strange. His monochromatic sensibility and cartoonish figuration have become a vehicle for examining immigration, class, depression, and the fractured mythology of the American dream, and this sculpture carries that conceptual weight in material form. The work belongs to an edition of 150, each example hand numbered on the underside, and is accompanied by a hand signed and hand numbered certificate of authenticity, along with its original wooden box, lending the acquisition a considered sense of ceremony appropriate to the edition's significance. In excellent condition and representative of a pivotal moment in Christian's expanding practice, CAROUSEL PYRAMID (SCULPTURE) offers collectors a rare opportunity to hold a distinctly literary artistic vision in their hands. The work rewards sustained attention, functioning as both a formally resolved sculptural object and a concentrated expression of the contradictions Christian has spent his career mapping with wit, precision, and genuine feeling.
