Knowledge

2024

A solitary figure crouches in focused concentration, magnifying glass in hand, transforming an ordinary clover into a swirling vortex of color and energy. Robert Martin's Knowledge, painted in oil on panel in 2024, builds its central tension from this act of looking, where the mundane and the cosmic collide within a single point of contact. Beams of light radiate outward from the scene, reinforcing the sense that scrutiny itself is generative, that the closer one looks, the more expansive the world becomes. The circular format, fifty centimetres in diameter, is not merely a compositional choice but a conceptual one. The tondo shape echoes the lens of the magnifying glass, the orbital pull of the spiral, and the cyclical nature of curiosity itself, inviting the eye to move continuously inward and outward without a fixed point of rest. Martin uses this geometry to suggest that knowledge is less a destination than a state of perpetual discovery, one sustained by wonder as much as by rigorous observation. Currently on offer at EDJI Gallery, this signed work sits comfortably within Martin's broader practice of rendering the intimate and the infinite as inseparable. Collectors drawn to figurative painting that carries genuine philosophical weight will find Knowledge a compelling acquisition, a work that rewards sustained attention precisely because it is, at its core, a meditation on what sustained attention makes possible.
