Maison en catalogne

1897

Rendered in watercolour on card in 1897, this intimate Catalan scene captures a village house draped in wisteria with the loose, luminous touch that would come to define Louis Valtat's early maturity. Working in the south at a moment when he was absorbing the lessons of both Neo-Impressionism and the emerging Fauvist sensibility, Valtat builds his composition through layered washes and pencil underdrawing, achieving a vibrant yet delicate interplay between architecture and flowering vegetation. The modest scale of the work, 24 by 30 centimetres, concentrates its chromatic energy and rewards close looking. Valtat (1869 to 1952) occupied a singular position in the transition from Post-Impressionism to Fauvism, and his Catalan works from the late 1890s are among the most sought after of his career. Spending extended periods on the Mediterranean coast alongside Renoir and in proximity to the circle that would shortly coalesce around Matisse, he developed a palette of exceptional warmth and directness. This watercolour exemplifies that period of confident experimentation, where colour is used structurally rather than descriptively, anticipating the bold chromatic language that would define the following decade. The work has been confirmed as authentic by the Valtat Committee. Monogrammed in pencil at lower left and currently offered through Libretis, this is a refined and historically significant small work that fits naturally within a collection focused on the French Post-Impressionist tradition. Its condition and provenance make it a compelling acquisition for collectors who prize works on paper of genuine art-historical moment.
