Witness Revelator (Hand-Embellished, Edition 8 of 10)

2924

In Witness Revelator, a figure surges forward against a concrete brick wall while a shadowy presence looms behind him, both enveloped beneath a long, star-scattered cape worn by the spectral form. This presiding spirit watches over the man in the foreground with an ambiguous authority, simultaneously protective and ominous. The setting is deliberately spare, yet its resonance is layered, evoking the street-level texture of New York City alongside the visual and spiritual memory of the Dominican Republic. The composition distills the dualities that run through Kenny Rivero's broader practice, where urban geography, ancestral presence, and personal history converge in images that feel at once intimate and mythic. Rivero, born in Washington Heights and now based in the Bronx, builds his work from the fractured and reconstructed narratives of Dominican-American identity, drawing on the hybrid cultural forms he absorbed growing up, from salsa and merengue to hip-hop and house music, alongside the Vodun and Santeria practices that were woven into daily life. Witness Revelator connects directly to a body of work shaped by the fear Rivero first encountered as a child in a neighborhood disproportionately affected by street violence and the crack epidemic, while insisting equally on the resilience and continuity of that community. The tension between vulnerability and spiritual guardianship gives the image its quiet, charged power. This hand-embellished archival pigment print, numbered and signed by the artist, is offered in a tightly limited edition of ten. Rivero's work resides in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Studio Museum in Harlem, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, and the Pérez Art Museum Miami, placing this edition within a practice recognized at the highest levels of institutional collecting.
