After John Raphael Smith’s A Bacchante after Sir Joshua Reynolds
This striking work by Kehinde Wiley reimagines a classical Bacchante figure through his signature lens of contemporary Black portraiture, reclaiming and recontextualizing the Western European artistic canon. Drawing from John Raphael Smith's mezzotint after Sir Joshua Reynolds, Wiley transforms the traditional subject by centering a Black figure in a role historically reserved for white European ideals of beauty and mythology. The work continues Wiley's ongoing dialogue between the Old Masters and modern identity, challenging notions of who is permitted to occupy spaces of grandeur, sensuality, and classical reverence.
