Ever Presence

2022

Ever Presence draws the eye into a luminous field of color that seems to pulse from within, a quality made possible by Zammitt's signature process of laminating hundreds of individually cut strips of acrylic plastic into a single, unified panel. Each translucent layer contributes its own hue to the whole, and light passing through or reflecting off the surface produces a depth that resists easy description, sitting somewhere between painting and sculpture, between the static and the perpetually shifting. Completed in 2022 and measuring nearly 150 centimeters square, the work commands a wall with confident scale while rewarding close attention with the intimacy of its incremental color transitions. Zammitt has spent decades refining this labor-intensive method, building compositions that feel simultaneously rigorous and warmly sensory. The title Ever Presence speaks to the phenomenological experience the work produces: viewers who spend time with the piece find that it changes with the light, the hour, and the position of the body, making it a genuinely living object rather than a fixed image. That responsiveness is not incidental but structural, built directly into the material logic of laminated acrylic, which functions as both medium and subject. For collectors, Ever Presence represents Zammitt at a mature and confident moment in his practice, demonstrating mastery of a process he has developed with few peers in contemporary art. The work is signed and offered through Scott Richards Contemporary Art, and its condition is commensurate with its recent date of completion. Because the piece is not framed, installation allows for flexibility in presentation, including options that emphasize the sculptural edge quality inherent to its construction.
