Glowstick 2
2016
Glowstick 2 (2016) presents a vertical column of concentrated, pulsing color suspended within a sleek stainless steel armature, measuring an imposing 220 by 75 by 10 centimeters. Powered by LED lights and a DMX controller, the work cycles through saturated hues that shift the emotional register of any space it inhabits, transforming walls and floors into temporary canvases of reflected light. David Batchelor constructed this piece as part of his sustained investigation into chromophobia, the cultural suspicion of pure color that he has traced through Western art and design, here answering that suspicion with an unabashed, almost confrontational luminosity. Batchelor, who has long collected discarded light fittings and neon tubes from the margins of urban life, elevates the vernacular glow of commercial signage into something meditative and formally rigorous. The choice of stainless steel as the enclosing structure is deliberate, its cool industrial precision serving as a foil for the warmth and mutability of the light within. The work sits comfortably within a lineage of light-based sculpture that includes Dan Flavin and James Turrell, yet Batchelor's sensibility is distinctly his own, rooted in the pleasures of found materials and the democratic brightness of the everyday city. For collectors, Glowstick 2 offers a rare combination of visual dynamism and physical restraint. Its slender profile allows installation in a range of domestic and institutional settings, while its programmable controller ensures that the work remains alive and variable over time. Signed by the artist and offered through Galeria Leme, this piece represents a mature and confident statement from one of Britain's most intellectually engaged practitioners working in color and light today.
