Concreto 0.5/14
2013
Concreto 0.5/14 presents a compact yet commanding union of industrial material and luminous colour, encasing vivid coloured glass within a dense concrete form to produce an object that feels simultaneously urban and otherworldly. Measuring just 18 by 11 by 6.5 centimetres, the work operates at an intimate scale that rewards close attention, drawing the eye toward the way light refracts through and across the glass while the rough, weighty concrete holds everything in deliberate tension. The contrast between these two materials, one associated with construction sites and civic infrastructure, the other with brilliance and transparency, is central to Batchelor's ongoing investigation into colour as a found phenomenon rather than a purely aesthetic choice. Batchelor has long been preoccupied with the idea that colour in the built environment exists as an accidental, almost fugitive quality, appearing unexpectedly in neon signs, plastic containers, and industrial glass rather than in the places traditionally assigned to art. Concreto 0.5/14 distils this philosophy into a sculptural object of remarkable concentration, transforming salvaged or deliberately selected materials into something that carries the weight of the street and the radiance of a jewel at the same time. The series to which this work belongs reflects his sustained engagement with Latin American concrete traditions, echoing the rigour of Concretismo while inflecting it with a distinctly British sensibility toward the found and the impure. Signed by the artist and offered through Galeria Leme, this piece represents a refined and collectible entry point into Batchelor's sculptural practice, one that holds its own in a domestic setting while carrying the conceptual density of a much larger body of work.
