Girl and Balloon on Found Landscape
2012
This celebrated work by Banksy superimposes his signature Girl with Balloon stencil onto a found vintage oil landscape painting, creating a striking juxtaposition of traditional and contemporary art. Part of the Crude Oil series, in which Banksy reimagined antique oil paintings with his own subversive imagery, the piece features a young girl reaching toward a drifting red heart shaped balloon against a monochromatic wilderness scene. The work sold at Fair Warning New York for $18,000,000, against a presale estimate of $13,000,000 to $18,000,000, marking it as Banksy's third highest price achieved at auction. The iconic motif was first stencilled on a London wall in 2002 and has since become one of the most recognisable images in contemporary art.
