Sink Drain

2025

A spiral of light and shadow pulls the eye inward in Aubrey Levinthal's "Sink Drain," a 2025 monotype that transforms an unremarkable domestic fixture into something quietly hypnotic. Working in a medium that rewards spontaneity and resists repetition, Levinthal coaxes from the press the same atmospheric warmth and psychological immediacy that distinguish her paintings, using the unique nature of the monotype to preserve every subtle gradation of tone. The result is an image that hovers between the mundane and the meditative, asking the viewer to slow down before an object almost always overlooked. This work belongs to a new series of unique editions developed in close dialogue with subjects explored in Levinthal's forthcoming solo exhibition, Mirror Matter, opening at Ingleby Gallery in June 2025. That relationship between the print series and the exhibition gives each piece an additional resonance, situating "Sink Drain" within a sustained body of inquiry into the domestic, the reflective, and the self. Levinthal has long been drawn to the spaces and objects that structure everyday life, finding in them a capacity to carry emotional weight well beyond their function. At 65.7 by 56.8 centimetres, the work is generously scaled for a monotype, commanding enough presence to hold a wall while retaining the intimacy inherent to the medium. The piece is hand-signed by the artist, and as a monotype it is by definition one of a kind, existing nowhere else in the edition. Collectors acquiring work from this series are encountering Levinthal at a significant moment in her practice, as her language expands across media without losing the quality of direct, personal observation that makes her work so distinctive.
