Bed/Beach
2022
Bed/Beach presents a layered tension between intimacy and escape, collapsing two domestic and psychological states into a single suspended image. Aubrey Levinthal, known for her figurative work exploring the interior lives of women, brings her signature blend of psychological acuity and material sensitivity to this 2022 archival pigment print. The composition is enriched by two silkscreen layers printed atop the base image, building a physical and visual depth that rewards close looking. Produced on 500gsm Somerset Enhanced Radiant White paper, the work carries a substantial, tactile presence that elevates it well beyond conventional print editions. The title itself operates as a soft collision, folding the languid horizontality of a bed into the open expanse of a beach, two states of rest that carry entirely different emotional charges. Levinthal's practice consistently finds meaning in threshold moments, the pause between waking and sleep, between solitude chosen and solitude endured, and this work distills that interest into a quietly charged object. The silkscreen passes introduce elements of opacity and surface incident that push the piece toward the condition of painting, asking the viewer to reconsider the boundaries of the printed medium. Available in an edition of twenty and signed by the artist, Bed/Beach represents a considered point of entry into Levinthal's growing body of work at a moment of sustained critical attention. The work is currently on offer through The BlackWood Gallery and is presented unframed, leaving room for the collector to make considered decisions about how this intimate yet expansive image lives within a space.
