Amadeo Luciano Lorenzato — Untitled
Amadeo Luciano Lorenzato

Untitled

1970

A painter of attentive observation of his surroundings, Amadeo Luciano Lorenzato (Brazil, 1900, 1995) developed a singular body of work rooted in the everyday landscapes of Belo Horizonte and its outskirts. Executed in the 1970s, this sunset landscape exemplifies a moment of maturity in his practice, in which seemingly modest subjects are transformed through a highly personal pictorial language. Rendered in warm, muted tonalities, the composition captures the fleeting transition of light at dusk, as the vegetation in the foreground engages with the body of water beyond in fields of color and texture. Largely outside institutional circuits for much of his career, Lorenzato brought to painting knowledge derived from his work in construction, developing a distinctive technique, often employing improvised tools that yield dense, rhythmic surfaces. In this work, the tactile dimension of painting becomes central: striated layers structure sky and ground, while subtle chromatic shifts evoke atmosphere rather than precise topographical description. The result is a landscape that operates between figuration and abstraction, privileging structure, repetition, and formal balance. Produced during a period of growing recognition, between the late 1960s and early 1970s, when he participated in exhibitions in Belo Horizonte and was selected for the Third Bratislava Triennial, the present work reflects the consolidation of his visual vocabulary. Paintings from this moment distill lived experience into essential forms, establishing an atmosphere of stillness and permanence that transcends the specificity of the depicted motif.
