Modesty
2023
Modesty is a commanding installation work by San Francisco-based artist Koak, completed in 2023 and currently presented through Perrotin. The piece brings together a solid ash cabinet structure with enamel paint and archival varnish alongside a collection of twenty-one drawings on rag paper, each rendered in a richly varied vocabulary of graphite, pastel, ink, casein, and chalk sourced directly from the cliffs of Seven Sisters in East Sussex. Protected beneath optium plexiglass and held within metal hardware, the drawings are simultaneously preserved and displayed as living elements of a larger architectural object. At over two meters tall and nearly as wide, the work commands physical presence while inviting close reading, the handmade chalk connecting the intimacy of mark-making to a specific, storied landscape. Koak is widely recognized for a figurative practice rooted in queer experience, desire, and the charged ambiguity of the body, and Modesty extends those concerns into three-dimensional form. The cabinet as a structural choice carries undeniable symbolic weight, simultaneously a domestic object, a container of hidden things, and a site of revelation when opened or approached. The drawings housed within cycle through Koak's signature graphic language, elongated forms, tender gestures, and quietly surreal moments that resist easy resolution. The title itself frames the entire encounter with a kind of restraint that paradoxically draws the viewer closer, asking what modesty conceals and what it quietly insists upon. For collectors, Modesty represents a significant work within Koak's ongoing investigation of how intimacy and identity are stored, revealed, and protected. The material choices are deliberately layered, pairing industrial and archival elements with substances gathered from the natural world, and the result is a work that feels at once rigorously crafted and organically alive. The absence of a separate frame is meaningful here, as the cabinet itself functions as both container and presentation, making the acquisition of this piece an acquisition of a complete and self-sufficient environment.
