A superb and very rare Cizhou sgraffiato 'peony' pillow,

北宋 磁州窰白地黑花纏枝牡丹紋如意形枕

This Northern Song dynasty Cizhou ware pillow showcases the kiln's renowned sgraffiato technique, wherein black slip decoration is meticulously incised to expose the cream colored ground beneath. The ruyi shaped headrest and pentagonal base are adorned with three elegant lotus blooms surrounded by scrolling peony foliage, demonstrating the ceramic artisans' mastery of both form and decorative precision. The selective glazing that leaves portions of the stoneware body exposed is characteristic of Cizhou production and adds textural variation to this exceptional and rare functional vessel.

Medium
the curved headrest of a lobed ruyi shape and raised on a high pentagonal base, the top decorated with three lotus blooms borne on dense scrolling foliage issuing curling leaves in black slip, skilfully incised and cut away to reveal the cream slipped ground beneath, applied overall with a transparent glaze save for the front edge of the headrest and the front and underside of the base, revealing the stoneware body, Japanese wood box
