Philip Golub Reclining
1971
This commanding oil on canvas depicts Philip Golub, the son of Sleigh's close friend and fellow artist Leon Golub, reclining barefoot on lush green grass in a sun dappled garden setting, wearing only blue swim trunks. A decorative stone birdbath anchors the composition to the right while loosely rendered foliage fills the background. Sleigh subverts the traditional art historical convention of the reclining nude by placing a male subject in a pose typically reserved for the female figure, a hallmark of her feminist practice. The work is a significant example of her celebrated portraiture from the early 1970s and represents an important moment in the feminist figuration movement.
