This 17th century hanging scroll depicts Maharaja Manjushri, the bodhisattva of wisdom in Buddhist iconography, rendered in ink on paper by the accomplished Japanese painter Kano Tsunenobu. The work features a calligraphic inscription by Erin Shōki, adding a layer of textual authority and spiritual significance to the painted image. As part of a larger collection of Qing and Ming period monastic paintings and calligraphy, this scroll exemplifies the cross cultural artistic exchange between Japanese and Chinese Buddhist traditions during the early modern period.
