Hazy Blues
2022
Hazy Blues immerses a shadowed figure in an expansive field of blue, its forms dissolving at the edges in a way that evokes both presence and disappearance. Produced in 2022 as a silkscreen with silver powder across five colors on 320-gram Coventry Rag paper with hand-deckled edges, the print carries a luminous, almost atmospheric weight. Shikeith drew inspiration from the concept of the glitch, treating digital disruption not as failure but as a symbol of resistance against harmful systemic structures. The silver powder embedded throughout the surface catches light unpredictably, reinforcing that sense of instability and transformation, of something caught between states. The work was created in direct collaboration with Gary Lichtenstein Editions at Mana Contemporary in Jersey City, where Shikeith supervised every stage of the printing process, and the resulting edition reflects that hands-on investment. Lichtenstein Editions brings over four decades of silkscreen expertise to the work, and the material quality here is exceptional, from the density and tooth of the Coventry Rag paper to the precision of the color layering beneath the silver finish. Published by Aperture Foundation on the occasion of Shikeith's debut monograph, the print exists in dialogue with the artist's broader photographic and film practice, which centers Black male subjects in states of meditation, vulnerability, and spiritual openness. Limited to an edition of 25, each print is signed and numbered by the artist on the recto. For collectors drawn to work that negotiates the sacred and the fragile, Hazy Blues offers a concentrated and visually arresting entry point into one of the most compelling voices in contemporary photography and multiples today.
