Yellowstone layered Concrete

2021

Yellowstone Layered Concrete presents a striking collision of photographic image and raw material, where a C-print documenting the geologic drama of Yellowstone National Park is physically embedded within poured cement. The result is a sculptural photograph that refuses the flat conventions of the medium, pushing the image into three-dimensional space while the weight and texture of the concrete grounds it firmly in the material world. Wilson's process transforms landscape photography from a passive record of place into an active, tactile encounter, one in which the geological forces pictured in the image seem to continue their work through the very substance encasing them. Wilson has developed an internationally recognized practice around this dialogue between photographic representation and physical construction, and Yellowstone Layered Concrete is a strong example of her mature vision. The volcanic terrain of Yellowstone carries its own associations with deep time, elemental pressure, and transformation, qualities that resonate directly with the hardening, compressive nature of concrete as a material. Rather than framing nature at a distance, Wilson fuses it into an object that accumulates its own presence and history. This unique work, measuring 56.5 by 46.4 by 3.2 centimeters and signed by the artist, is presented by Galerie Christophe Gaillard. Its modest scale belies a conceptual ambition that rewards sustained attention, making it a compelling acquisition for collectors drawn to artists who challenge the boundaries between photography, sculpture, and landscape.
