Floating City
1966
Painted in 1966, Floating City distills Leonardo Nierman's singular vision into a compact yet commanding composition on Masonite. Luminous architectural forms appear to hover and dissolve against a deep, atmospheric ground, suggesting a metropolis suspended between the physical and the ethereal. Nierman's characteristic command of light is fully evident here, as he builds radiant passages of color that seem to emanate from within the panel rather than simply rest upon its surface. The relatively small scale, measuring approximately 37.5 by 27.3 centimeters, concentrates the visual energy and rewards close, sustained looking. Nierman occupies a distinctive position within twentieth-century Latin American modernism, working at the intersection of abstraction, cosmic imagination, and lyrical painterly technique. Having trained as a violinist before devoting himself fully to painting, he brought a musician's sensitivity to rhythm and tone, qualities that resonate throughout Floating City in the way forms pulse and recede across the composition. By 1966 he had already achieved significant international recognition, exhibiting widely in Mexico, the United States, and Europe, and this work reflects the confident maturity of an artist fully in command of his vocabulary. The panel is signed by the artist and presented in very good condition, making it an accessible and visually captivating entry point into Nierman's output for collectors new to his work, as well as a refined addition for those already familiar with his practice. Works of this period on Masonite, a support Nierman favored for its smooth surface and durability, have proven consistently desirable on the secondary market and represent a compelling opportunity to acquire a well-preserved example from one of his most productive decades.
