Renée Petropoulos — For Clarice (Lispector)
Renée Petropoulos

For Clarice (Lispector)

2020

For Clarice (Lispector) is a 45.2 by 45.2 centimeter inkjet print with collaged elements, made in 2020 and designated as a unique work. The title positions this piece as an act of dedication, reaching across disciplines to honor the visionary Brazilian author Clarice Lispector, whose prose was itself deeply concerned with perception, interiority, and the limits of language. Petropoulos works in a similar register, treating the picture plane as a space where image and text, print and collage, coexist in productive tension. The integration of collaged elements into the printed surface gives the work a tactile, accumulative quality that resists the flatness of conventional printmaking, inviting close looking and repeated return. Renée Petropoulos has built a widely recognized practice across Los Angeles and international contexts, holding the 2019 Santa Monica Artist Fellowship and an Iaspis Stockholm International Grant, among other distinctions. Her recent residencies, including time at the Palm Springs Museum of Art and at 18th Street Arts Center alongside Oaxacan artist Arturo Hernandez, reflect a sustained commitment to dialogue across communities and geographies. During the period of Covid-19 lockdowns, she co-organized Drive-By-Art in Los Angeles, demonstrating the socially engaged dimension of her work that runs alongside her studio practice. Signed by the artist, this work is offered unframed, giving the collector full latitude in presentation. Its intimately scaled format and unique status make it a rare opportunity to acquire a considered, singular object from a consequential moment in Petropoulos's recent output.
