Swimmers
Rendered in etching and drypoint, this intimate composition by Maurice Asselin places nude figures at the water's edge, their forms dissolved into the surrounding landscape through soft, considered strokes that recall the luminous, atmospheric quality of French Impressionist printmaking. Numbered 8 from an edition of just 20, and signed on the plate, the work dates to the first half of the twentieth century, a period during which Asselin moved fluidly between painting and printmaking to explore the female figure in natural settings. The restrained scale, 28 by 18.5 centimeters, concentrates the viewer's attention on the interplay between the bodies and their environment, a balance Asselin achieved with particular sensitivity throughout his career. Asselin is recognized above all for his depictions of women, from tender scenes of maternity to figures set within open landscapes, and this work sits comfortably within that broader practice. His sustained engagement with the coastal scenery of Brittany, alongside travels to the artists' community of Anticoli Corrado in the Roman countryside and subsequent exhibitions in London, shaped a vision that was at once deeply French in sensibility and broadly European in its ambitions. The Swimmers reflects that cultivated eye, using the spare vocabulary of drypoint to suggest light, water, and flesh with a delicacy that rewards close looking. Collectors should note that as a work created in Italy more than seventy years ago by a deceased artist, the piece requires an export licence prior to international shipment, which may extend handling times depending on the destination. The work is offered unframed, presenting an immediate opportunity to present it within a chosen context.
