Handjob
2025
A large-format glazed porcelain work measuring nearly two meters tall, Handjob commands immediate physical presence before its subject matter fully registers. Strzelecki has translated the intimacy and tactile charge of the human hand into a ceramic surface that oscillates between the clinical and the sensual, the monumental and the mundane. The glaze carries its own visual language, pooling and breaking across the composition in ways that resist total authorial control, introducing an element of material chance into what is otherwise a deliberately scaled and confident gesture. Strzelecki works at the intersection of craft tradition and contemporary figuration, consistently choosing materials whose historical associations with domesticity and decorative function he redirects toward subjects that are psychologically loaded or culturally fraught. Porcelain, with its connotations of fragility, preciousness, and the feminine decorative arts, becomes here a pointed vehicle for a title and image that carry explicit and irreverent weight. The tension between medium and subject is generative rather than merely provocative, asking the viewer to hold refinement and rawness simultaneously. Signed by the artist and currently presented through Anat Ebgi, Handjob represents a strong example of Strzelecki's mature practice and would occupy a commanding position in any collection focused on contemporary painting's expanded field or the renewed critical engagement with ceramics as a fine art form. The work is offered without a frame, a choice that reinforces its sculptural self-sufficiency and encourages installation decisions that honor the raw perimeter of the porcelain surface itself.
