Lonesome Hero #3

2021

Lonesome Hero #3 is a colored pencil work on cardboard, completed in 2021 by Yogyakarta-based artist Roby Dwi Antono. Measuring 40 by 44 centimeters, the piece exemplifies the paradoxical visual world Antono has developed across painting and drawing, where wide-eyed figures occupy an uncertain territory between human, animal, and alien. His practice draws simultaneously on Renaissance pictorial tradition, science fiction imagery, natural history, and surrealist fantasy, and the result is a cast of characters who feel at once deeply familiar and entirely invented. The intimacy of colored pencil on cardboard, a deliberately modest support, gives the work a handmade tenderness that offsets the strangeness of its subject, reinforcing the sense that these figures emerge from private memory as much as from any fixed iconographic source. Antono has built a focused international exhibition record from his studio in Yogyakarta, with recent solo presentations at Thinkspace Projects in Los Angeles and Srisasanti Syndicate in Yogyakarta, both in 2021, and group appearances at ATM Gallery in New York and Unit London in the same period. His work sits comfortably within what has been called contemporary surrealism, yet it carries a personal emotional register that resists easy categorization. Lonesome Hero #3 is offered through the Art Keeps Nonprofits Going Benefit Auction, with proceeds benefiting the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund and Heart of Dinner, distributed via The Here and There Collective, a fiscally sponsored project operating under the tax-exempt umbrella of Players Philanthropy Fund, a recognized 501(c)(3) public charity. Contributions are tax-deductible to the fullest extent permitted by law.
