UVA (United Visual Artists)

United Visual Artists (UVA) is a London-based art and design studio founded in 2003 by Matt Clark, working collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team of artists, architects, coders, and engineers. The studio operates at the intersection of light, space, sound, and technology, creating immersive installations, public sculptures, and live experiences that challenge perception and invite contemplative engagement. Their practice is deeply rooted in systems thinking and the exploration of how code, light, and physical materials can generate environments that feel simultaneously precise and poetic. UVA has produced a significant body of work spanning large-scale public installations and gallery exhibitions. Among their most celebrated works is 'Momentum' (2013), a kinetic light installation featuring pendulum-like columns of LEDs that create hypnotic wave patterns, and 'Chorus' (2015), which explored harmonic resonance through light and sound. The studio gained wide recognition for their collaboration with Massive Attack on live stage design, as well as their ongoing explorations of natural phenomena such as magnetic fields, fluid dynamics, and the passage of time. Their installations often employ custom software and bespoke hardware to generate behaviors that feel organic and alive. UVA has exhibited internationally at institutions and events including the V&A Museum in London, the National Museum of China in Beijing, Art Basel, and the Barbican Centre. Their work sits within a broader tradition of light art pioneered by figures such as James Turrell and Olafur Eliasson, while carving out a distinctly contemporary, technologically sophisticated identity. The studio is regarded as one of the foremost practices merging aesthetic rigor with technical innovation, and their projects consistently provoke reflection on human perception, natural systems, and the poetic potential of digital processes.
