Uemura Shōen (1875-1949) was a pioneering Japanese painter and the first woman to be designated a Living National Treasure in Japan. She specialized in bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women) and nihonga (Japanese-style painting), becoming one of the most celebrated female artists of the Meiji and Showa periods.
