Stan Brakhage

American(January 14, 1933 – 2003)

Stan Brakhage was one of the most prolific and influential avant-garde filmmakers of the 20th century, producing over 350 films across six decades that radically expanded the language of cinema. Working outside Hollywood, he explored themes of birth, death, sexuality, and perception through techniques such as hand-painting directly on film stock, rapid montage, and the removal of the camera lens, as seen in masterworks like 'Mothlight' (1963), 'Dog Star Man' (1961–64), and 'The Act of Seeing with One's Own Eyes' (1971). Brakhage was a central figure in American experimental film and taught extensively at the University of Colorado, where his writings and lectures profoundly shaped generations of filmmakers and visual artists.
