Rudolph Ernst (1854, 1932) was an Austrian Orientalist painter renowned for his meticulously detailed depictions of Islamic architecture, interiors, and figures from the Near East and North Africa. Though he spent much of his career in Paris, Ernst never traveled to the East himself, instead drawing inspiration from objects, textiles, and photographs collected in his studio. His works are celebrated for their rich color, jewel-like precision, and romanticized vision of Ottoman and Moorish culture.
